Health, Fitness, Nutrition, Vitamins & Diet
Years of dependency on drugs and alcohol severely diminish ones mental and emotional well-being, and an individual’s addiction has likely taken an extreme toll on their overall physical fitness as well. At Meridian Treatment Solutions, we believe that physical fitness and exercise are two of the keys to maintaining a healthy, balanced, and sober existence. To reverse the trends most clients have likely developed as part of an unhealthy lifestyle, we will provide them with one-on-one and group sessions with a certified fitness instructor.
Crucial for Recovery
There are many reasons why a physical fitness program is one of the crucial components of a client’s recovery. Regular exercise causes the release of endorphins. Endorphins have been shown to have a “feel good” effect on the brain and body, to control pain, reduce depression and anxiety, relieve stress, and to decrease cravings for addictive substances. As clients progress through their sessions with their personal trainers, they’ll not only notice a difference in their physical appearance, but they will also begin to feel strong again and their self-esteem will increase.
Diet and nutrition counselors will discuss the importance of diet, nutrition and regular exercise. Clients in our PHP program, will meet with counselors on a one-on-one and group basis where counselors will outline an individualized healthy, easy to manage and maintain diet for each client, based on their likes and dislikes.
Vitamins, Minerals and Nutrients
Vitamins, minerals and nutrients are important factors in the production of neurotransmitters. Deficiencies of these vitamins are common with chronic alcohol consumption and repletion is useful. Alcohol consumption also depletes the mineral magnesium. Low levels of magnesium are associated with multiple symptoms, including “treatment resistant” depression. Fish oils contain the omega-3 fatty acid EPA. Studies have shown supplementation of EPA is of significant benefit for a variety of psychological disorders.
Almost all clients tolerate these supplements well with low risk for adverse side effects when properly used. Therefore, a carefully designed regimen of nutritional supplements will be used.
